In Romania, the 1st March represents the coming of the spring. This is the day when people celebrate Mărţisor. This is the Romanian traditional celebration of the beginning of the spring.
On this day, men offer women a talisman object also called Mărţişor, consisting of a jewel or a small decoration tied to a red and white string, and… snowdrop flowers.
The red and white string is considered to be a unity of the contrasts as: passion and purity, winter and spring or even war and peace.
This tradition is known since Antiquity when little rocks were painted in white and red or small coins were offered tied with a white and red wool string.
