Eugen-Florin Zamfirescu

A curious fellow with a mouthful of a name, the artist Eugen-Florin Zamfirescu – or Florin for short.

Eugen-Florin’s formal introduction to art was through the study of both photography and cinematography in Romania. He has completed professional projects in film direction and editing, photographic portraits and essays.

A self-described modernist, he has playfully attempted some figurative themes. His early works ignited a passion to begin his own artistic quest – to find the old masters’ “fingerprints” and force them to speak to him.

Over the past twelve years Eugen-Florin has built up an impressive body of artistic work drawn from his own research into pigments, mediums, light, composition as well as fragments of information gathered in some of the great museums of the world. His research has explored the history of art and civilizations, philosophy and mythology.  The series of paintings entitled “Civilizations” is the collective sum of all this acquired knowledge.

Eugen-Florin’s glazing techniques (which he jokingly refers to as “Renaissance 2.0”)  reveal a meticulous craftsmanship and richness of detail. Through this process, Florin has discovered his own personal style, as well as colours, subjects and a luminosity that is uniquely his.

Born in a small town in Romania, Eugen-Florin Zamfirescu immigrated to Canada in 1997. Presently he lives in Toronto where he pursues his lifelong passions: fine arts, philosophy and astrophysics.

His art

Art inspired by history, philosophy and science is at the core of Eugen-Florin Zamfirescu’s work. In the evolutionary timelines of civilizations, in the slow decay of societies, in the laws of nature that affect everything from molecules to galaxies, the artist is an explorer fascinated by it all.

Through his paintings, the artist expresses the magnificence of our short stay on Earth.  His work reflects back unto the world its own intrinsic beauty and mystery.

Eugen-Florin is fascinated by time, old instruments, intricate machinery and humankind’s connection to past, present and future.

Each painting is an invitation to the viewer to come closer and engage in the unravelling of the worlds carefully woven within.  The artist immaculately layers the finest of detail, and in so doing creates a truly rich and transformative experience. Eugen-Florin Zamfirescu’s work is about birth, decay, destruction and regeneration, and ultimately: the legitimacy of hope.
